Winter’s Here!

By Wes (July 8, 2006 @ 8:52 am)

Hey all!
Well, winter is officially here! Sheesh – it gets a little chilly here at night, downright nippy I’d say, and we welcome it! What a great change it is to have cool temps every night and morning. Trust me, the hot sunny days will be here soon enough, and we’ll enjoy them too. Right now, its nice to experience a change of seasons.
June was a blur of activity, as we were priveledged to host Jean’s parents for most of the month. Wow, did we get out and about Kenya. I’ll save the details, as most of them you’ll find boring more than likely, but here’s some of the main trips we went on:
1. Turtle Bay, near the town of Malindi on the coast of Kenya. Was great to relax, and enjoy the luxury lifestyle and chocolate crepes again. Love that place! The highlight for me was snorkling, while Jean was able to get her first scuba lesson – she’s got a great story for this one…but I’ll let her tell it…
2. Lamu, further north of Malindi on the coast again – this time it was just me and Jean, celebrating our 13 wedding anniversary. What a treat that was, and an amazing cultural experience. The highlight was definately our dhow trip to Manda Island. What a fun experience…
3. Masai Mara, looking for the Big 5. J and her parents spent 3 days out in the wilds of Kenya, searching out animals of various shapes and sizes. J’s highlight was the incredibly huge star-filled sky of the savannah.
4. Crater Lake hike day. We hiked around the 4.5 km crater (on the inside was a lake, hence the name) of an extinct volcano, and had a great picnic lunch when we finished. Great views and good times. The highlight? When we stopped! It was fun, but tough (especially for the kids and those that carried them).
Besides those things, we hung out at home, the grandparents had fun with the grandkids (lots of grampa wresoling), and we showed them the sights, sounds and smells of Nairobi and surrounding area.
Anyway, it was a great month, and now we’re ready for some downtime before school starts up again in August. Drop us a line when you get the chance…
